How to Increase Self-Esteem – Learning to Believe in Your Own Worth
Self-esteem is the way we look at ourselves. It is that inner voice that accompanies us every day and that can become a great ally or a difficult obstacle to overcome. Having good self-esteem does not mean feeling better than others, but recognizing our own value, accepting our limits and trusting our ability to face life. Many people spend years seeking approval from others, forgetting that the first important recognition must come from ourselves. Self-esteem does not come from perfection, because nobody is perfect. It comes from the awareness that we are people on a journey, capable of learning, changing and improving. The first step to increasing self-esteem is learning to accept ourselves. We are often much more understanding with others than we are with ourselves. When a friend makes a mistake, we say: “Don’t worry, it can happen.” When we make a mistake, instead, we may tell ourselves: “I am not good enough”, “I am not capable”, “I should have done better”. This negative inner dialogue, repeated over time, can weaken our confidence. That is why it is important to learn to speak to ourselves with respect and kindness. It does not mean ignoring our mistakes or stopping improving, but recognizing that making mistakes is part of every human being’s journey. Nobody grows without facing difficulties, falls and moments of uncertainty. A simple way to strengthen self-esteem is to start recognizing our successes. Many people remember failures perfectly and completely forget their victories. A small mistake can take all our attention, while dozens of positive things are left aside. Every day we move forward, even when we do not realize it. Facing a difficult day, helping someone, having the courage to make a choice, learning something new are all small successes that deserve to be recognized. It can be useful to create a gratitude journal, where every evening we write down three positive things from our day. This simple exercise helps our mind focus not only on problems, but also on the resources and qualities we have. Taking care of ourselves is also a fundamental gesture to increase self-esteem. When we pay attention to our body and our mind, we send an important message: “I am a person who deserves care and respect.” Exercising, eating in a balanced way, sleeping well, spending time in nature and cultivating our passions are all ways to strengthen our relationship with ourselves. Great changes are not necessary: even a walk, listening to music, reading a book or dedicating a few moments to silence can help us find balance and serenity. Another obstacle to self-esteem is the fear of other people’s judgment. Many people give up expressing themselves or pursuing their dreams because they constantly worry about what others might think. The truth is that we cannot control other people’s opinions, but we can choose how much power we give them over our lives. Our value does not depend on external judgments, the results we achieve or the approval of others. Our value exists even before our successes. It is also important to surround ourselves with positive people, capable of encouraging and appreciating who we are. The people we meet every day can influence the way we see ourselves. Those who support us and remind us of our qualities contribute to our growth, while those who constantly put us down can weaken our confidence. Increasing self-esteem is a journey that requires time, patience and above all the ability to be kind to ourselves. It does not mean suddenly becoming confident in every situation or never having difficult moments again, but learning day after day to recognize our strength even when life challenges us. Self-confidence does not appear all at once, but grows through the experiences we live, the challenges we face and the small victories that we often underestimate. Every time we overcome a fear, face a problem or find the courage to take a step forward, we are building a piece of our self-esteem. There will be days when we feel stronger, full of energy and aware of our abilities, and others when doubts, insecurities and fears return. It is normal, because even the most confident people go through moments of fragility. The difference is not allowing those moments to define who we are. We must remember that every person has unique qualities, experiences and abilities. There is no other human being exactly like us, with our story, our way of seeing the world, our sensitivity and our talents. We often compare ourselves with others, forgetting that everyone follows a different path, with different times and difficulties. We do not have to become someone else to have value. We do not have to reach perfection to deserve respect and love. We must learn to recognize the light that already exists inside us, even when we go through periods when it seems hidden. Self-esteem grows when we start listening less to the voice of fear and give more space to the voice of trust. It grows when we stop focusing only on our flaws and start seeing everything beautiful that we have built throughout our lives. True self-esteem is born when we stop constantly asking ourselves: “Am I enough?” and start answering with conviction: “I am a person who is growing, with strengths and weaknesses, with dreams and possibilities. And that is already a great value.” Because our value does not depend on what we own, the recognition we receive or the judgment of others. Our value comes from the fact that we are unique people, capable of learning, changing and bringing something special into the world. Learning to love ourselves does not mean closing ourselves off from others, but creating a solid foundation from which we can love, help and share with greater serenity. When a person recognizes their own value, even the way they experience relationships, difficulties and opportunities changes deeply.
